As the temperature drops a degree or two, many of us are looking for ways to keep the winter sniffles at bay. When it comes to giving your body a helping hand - nature can often provide the best solutions.
Honey became known as the ‘nectar of the gods’ all the way back in ancient Greek times. It was rumoured to have unbelievable healing powers, many of which have been substantiated in the thousands of years since.
Today, many people swear by the mantra of ‘a spoonful of honey a day’ for an all natural immune-system boost. And indeed the marvellous health benefits of honey include its antioxidants, antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties.
It’s a natural soother, perfect for tackling sore throats and coughs. It can also help protect the body from inflammation and cell damage. And incredibly, honey has even been linked to improved heart health and cancer management.
But before rushing out to the supermarket, it's worth noting that not all honeys offer the same nutritional value. Generally speaking, the purer the honey, the stronger its medicinal benefits.
Raw honey comes straight from the beehive, and is usually higher in antioxidants and nutritional content. By contrast, supermarket-bought honey is often filtered, in a process removing the trace amounts of pollen it may contain.
Eating local honey can help you to build immunity to seasonal allergies, as it contains pollen native to the area you live in.
So what about Bemuse; why did we choose to make a drink that uses raw, fermented honey at its base?
First and foremost, we’re nature lovers. Knowing that bees play an essential role in supporting the entire food chain, helped us to make the decision to invest in honey cultivation and sustainable beekeeping.
All of our ingredients are sourced sustainably and as locally as possible. This informed our decision only to use raw, British-sourced honeys (a different varietal in each of our blends) which has the added benefit of layering depth and complexity in our sparkling wines.
So this winter, we’re encouraging you to celebrate the moment without compromise. And before you head to the medicine aisle, consider the benefits of honey and some of the other natural ingredients you may already have in your store cupboard.
