The clocks have turned and Halloween is behind us. There’s no question that we’re well into the cosy season and hearty, comforting food is the order of the day.
We love leaning into the changing seasons, and autumn means enjoying all of life’s simple pleasures. Slow days, crisp leafy walks and the warm glow of candlelight.
A well chosen drink can turn a simple meal into a special occasion. So when considering what to enjoy with your autumn feast, keep the following principles in mind.
Consider the weight and intensity of your food, and match it to your drink. For example, lighter meals (salads and the like) tend to work well with lighter drinks (think summer rosé). You don’t want your food to overpower the delicate flavours in your glass, or vice versa.
Here’s a quick guide to what’ll be on our table this season…
First up: an absolute autumn classic. Seasonal squash and crispy sage leaf risotto. A rich and creamy dish like this needs a refreshing partner, and our bright, zippy Origo is just the thing. With its notes of green apple, gooseberry and mint it’s got just the right amount of acidity to complement the richness of the dish.
Autumnal Sundays call for roast chicken with plenty of root vegetables and leafy greens. Calluna Tarragon & Basil was simply made for the occasion; with its herbaceous notes alongside earthy, savoury undertones.
It wouldn’t be autumn without an oh-so-warming beef stew. This heavier dish calls for a more robust drink, so we’ll be reaching for Pomona Ginger & Cardamom. With its gently aromatic palate and the subtle warmth of cardamom spice, it's a drink that can hold its own against heartier meals.
And finally, something sweet to finish. Make the most of seasonal apples and blackberries with a generous serving of crumble. With its pleasantly silky texture and hints of delicate rose petals, Fiora Wild Raspberry makes for a delightful pudding partner. The drink’s subtle vanilla notes will pair just wonderfully with your lashings of custard.
