Non alcoholic honey wine is creating a real buzz amongst health-conscious consumers looking for a fuller-flavoured, celebratory wine alternative. Yet shoppers are often keen to understand more…
How is honey wine made? Is it sweet? What makes it healthier, and a more planet friendly drink?
Read on for the full scoop.
WHAT IS HONEY WINE?
Honey wine is a drink made with a fermented honey base, instead of fermented grapes as per ‘traditional’ wines. Honey wine would traditionally have been known as ‘mead’, which is actually the oldest fermented drink known.
At Bemuse we make our non-alcoholic honey wine by a natural fermentation process, using only a handful of ingredients: honey, water and a special type of yeast which doesn’t produce alcohol.
IS IT SWEET?
As for all drinks, the taste varies depending on the ingredients and production methods used.
All Bemuse honey wines are actually Brut, meaning dry. We use a variety of raw, British sourced honeys which act as a backdrop, giving the wines a depth that pairs superbly with food.
Our wines are lightly sparkling, and offered in four distinct flavours that range from light, to fuller bodied. And whilst we’re often shy about blowing our own trumpet, we’ve won multiple taste awards for our wines, which are often described as complex, refreshing and curiously different.
WHAT MAKES IT A HEALTHIER DRINK?
Honey has been recognised for its marvellous healing properties since ancient Greek times, when it was known as the ‘nectar of the gods’. In the thousands of years since, honey has been proven to contain antioxidants, antibacterial and even anti-inflammatory properties.
At Bemuse we work with simple, all natural ingredients. Our drinks contain no artificial preservatives and no refined sugars, resulting in a very low calorie, low sugar yet astonishingly delicious drink.
WHY IS IT A MORE PLANET-FRIENDLY DRINK?
Consumers can enjoy their glass of fizz in the knowledge that this drink makes a seriously positive environmental impact too. The role that bees play in pollinating food crops and supporting biodiversity is not to be underestimated.
Beekeeping is also low maintenance and requires no irrigation, unlike traditional wine production which often uses pesticides as well as heavy water usage.
HOW DID BEMUSE COME INTO BEING?
Co-founders and friends Anna and Nataliya started the business out of a real desire to find healthy, grown-up and truly celebratory non alcoholic drinks.
They were committed to founding a business that made a positive impact, and as nature lovers also understood the critical role that bees play in supporting life on earth. This all led them to starting a business with the mantra: Bee inspired to drink differently.
